One caveat up front, because accuracy matters: the marking scheme is set by the NTA each year and can change. The rule of thumb below assumes the long-standing +4 correct, −1 wrong convention for MCQs — but before you build a strategy on it, confirm the exact scheme on the official information bulletin for your exam and year.

Why negative marking exists

Negative marking exists to punish blind guessing — to make sure a rank reflects knowledge, not luck. That tells you exactly how to beat it: never guess blindly, but never confuse an educated guess with a blind one. The entire skill is knowing which is which.

The expected-value rule

“Expected value” just means: on average, across many such questions, does guessing add marks or cost them? With +4 / −1 and four options:

  • Blind guess among 4 options: one time in four you gain 4; three times you lose 1. Average = (¼ × +4) + (¾ × −1) = +0.25. Slightly positive — random guessing is break-even to marginally favourable.
  • Eliminate 1 option (guess among 3): average = (⅓ × +4) + (⅔ × −1) = +0.67. Clearly worth it.
  • Eliminate 2 options (guess among 2): average = (½ × +4) + (½ × −1) = +1.5. Almost always attempt.
Every option you eliminate doesn't just improve your odds — it changes the maths from a coin flip to a clear yes.

Elimination changes everything

Notice what the numbers say: the lever isn't whetherto guess, it's how many options you can rule out first. Converting a blind guess into an educated one — spotting the dimensionally-wrong option, the answer that's the right number but wrong sign, the distractor that ignores a condition in the stem — is the highest-value habit in the whole exam.

Numerical questions are different

Integer / numerical-answer questions often carry no negative marking— and that flips the strategy entirely. If there's no penalty, there is never a reason to leave one blank: a reasoned estimate has upside and zero downside. Treat penalty MCQs and no-penalty numericals as two different games, and confirm which is which for your year.

Turning it into an exam-day habit

This decision has to be automatic, because you'll make it 180-plus times under a running clock. It pairs naturally with the two-pass method: in Pass 1 you bank the certain marks; in Pass 2 you apply this rule to every flagged question — eliminate what you can, then attempt or leave based on the odds, not nerves.

Is it worth guessing when there is negative marking?
It depends on how many options you can eliminate. With the standard +4 / −1 scheme, guessing at random among four options is break-even on average, and every option you can rule out tips the odds in your favour. If you can eliminate even one option, an educated guess is positive on average; if you can’t narrow it down at all and the question carries a penalty, leaving it blank is the safer call.
